Evidence Items 5–17 — June 9, 2020

The remaining items on this page were primarily collected by Investigator McElroy from the northwest bedroom and adjoining areas.

They include:

Item 5: Suppressor inside a cloth liquor bag in a dresser drawer.

Item 6: Three live 9mm rounds located in the same liquor bag as the suppressor.

Item 7: Bullet recovered from inside a wall in the room adjacent to the northwest bedroom.

Item 8: Broken high-capacity magazine.

Item 9: Black nylon holster and camouflage nylon holster.

Item 10: Plastic holster located on the refrigerator.

Item 11: Holster containing a magazine for a SCCY pistol and nine live 9mm rounds.

Item 12: Additional holster.

Item 13: One live 7.62x39 round.

Item 14: Forty live 9mm rounds in a black bag.

Item 15: Two additional live 9mm rounds.

Item 16: Ballistic vest with plates.

Item 17: Multiple bags containing a clear rock-like substance.

Why This Page Matters

What This Document Shows

This Excel spreadsheet is an updated master inventory of physical evidence collected during the Randall Leslie / related investigation.

The evidence report is important because numerous later investigative reports refer back to numbered evidence items contained in this inventory, including firearms, ammunition, cellphones, DNA samples, vehicle evidence, items collected from 4088 Teakwood Drive and 6305 Stockton Drive, evidence recovered from the Mitsubishi Lancer, and other property processed by Chattanooga Police Department investigators.

The inventory provides the numbered framework necessary to trace individual pieces of evidence through the investigative file and compare them against crime-scene reports, forensic laboratory reports, photographs, search-warrant returns and property-storage records.

Item 177 — Later Addition to the Evidence Inventory

The case materials contain two versions of this Excel evidence report.

The earlier version reportedly ends at Item 176 and contains an “END OF REPORT” notation.

The version identified as “Updated 10-2-20” contains an additional Item 177 below that point.

Prior comparison of the two State-produced spreadsheets identifies Item 177 as:

97 live “TW 69” rounds on a disintegrating belt

with the location described as the:

trunk of a Pontiac Grand Am registered to Randall Leslie.

The case-file comparison also identifies Item 177 as being dated October 1, 2020 and entered under officer identifier JM634, while the preceding entries on that portion of the evidence inventory were entered under MJ74585.

The prior item, Item 176, was reportedly entered on August 3, 2020, creating a substantial time gap before Item 177 was added.

Connection to the Pontiac Grand Am

Investigator McElroy separately reported that on October 1, 2020, Investigator Stokes requested that he accompany Stokes to Precision Towing and Recovery in New Hope, Tennessee, where they searched and processed a Pontiac Grand Am.

McElroy reported locating a plastic bag containing numerous live rifle rounds in the trunk.

The ammunition was collected and entered into the CPD Property/Evidence system as Item 177.

McElroy also processed the vehicle interior with Bluestar and reported no indication of blood.

Why This Document Matters

This spreadsheet is one of the central evidence-control documents in the case.

It should be used to compare:

• evidence item numbers against the officers’ narrative reports;

• collection dates against evidence-storage dates;

• the officers identified as collecting or entering evidence;

• evidence recovered from Teakwood and Stockton;

• the three Derik Brown cellphones and other personal property;

• firearms and ammunition;

• evidence from the Mitsubishi Lancer;

• evidence from the Mercedes;

• evidence from the camper;

• DNA and biological samples;

• and later-added evidence such as Item 177.

It is particularly important to preserve both versions of the spreadsheet because the original and updated versions are not identical.

The case materials previously comparing the two files state that the original ends at Item 176, while the October 2 updated version contains Item 177 beneath the earlier end-of-report notation.

Those two files should therefore be displayed together so readers can directly compare the original evidence inventory with the later updated version.
